Open dialogue with other knowledge systems

Open dialogue with other knowledge systems is about bringing together different forms of knowledge and lived experience. This means that research should not be based only on established academic perspectives, but should also be able to take into account knowledge held by groups that have often had limited influence on research. The aim is to create better interaction between different ways of understanding and describing the world, while respecting human rights, self-determination, and the equitable sharing of benefits. Particularly when research concerns Indigenous peoples and local communities, it is important that they have influence over how knowledge and data about their traditions, lands, and resources are used.
