Publication resources

There are many resources that support open scholarly publication. This page highlights some key resources for Swedish researchers.

Publicera

The national platform for Swedish scholarly open access journals

Publicera is Sweden’s national digital platform for open access scholarly journals, administered by the National Library of Sweden (KB). The work on the platform is based on a government mandate assigning KB responsibility for its management and development, and since August 2022, this mandate has been included in KB’s official instructions.

The platform provides a common interface for the entire publishing process – from manuscript submission and peer review to open publication of full texts and metadata – including supplementary services that support journals in meeting the requirements of research funders and indexing databases.

Kriterium

A national platform for peer review and publication of scholarly books

Kriterium is a national platform for the peer review and publication of scholarly books in the humanities and social sciences. Through a coordinated review process, it ensures academic quality and open access to research results. Kriterium is a collaboration between Swedish universities, publishers, and the National Library of Sweden, supported by the Swedish Research Council and Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. The platform provides a model for open, peer-reviewed publishing that strengthens the role of the scholarly book within the open science system and contributes to the development of sustainable infrastructure for open science in Sweden.

Open Research Europe (ORE)

Open publication platform for researchers

Open Research Europe (ORE) is a publishing platform with open and transparent peer review. The platform is free of charge for both authors and readers and provides immediate open access to scientific publications across all disciplines.

ORE was established by the European Commission to provide a publishing venue for EU-funded research. The platform has now been further developed through a joint European collaboration involving several research organisations from different countries. From Sweden, the Swedish Research Council, Formas and Forte participate. Through this new collaboration, all researchers in the participating countries are given the opportunity to publish their scientific results openly and free of charge, regardless of funder.

The platform is hosted by the research centre CERN (Organisation Européenne pour la Recherche Nucléaire – European Organisation for Nuclear Research).

Open and transparent peer review process

ORE applies open peer review, in which review reports are published alongside the article. All publications are assigned a DOI and indexed in established databases such as Scopus and PubMed. The platform thus contributes to increased transparency, quality assurance and dissemination of research results.

Part of the transition to open science

The joint funding of ORE represents a step towards a more equitable and sustainable model for scientific publishing, in which access to research results is not dependent on subscriptions or individual publication fees. The initiative aligns with European and national objectives for immediate open access and responsible research assessment.
