The Swedish Research Council

The Swedish Research Council works to advance an open and transparent research system, in accordance with the government’s research policy priorities. This work is based on the national research policy objectives and encompasses both national coordination and international engagement. The Swedish Research Council coordinates the national effort to achieve open access to research data in Sweden, which forms part of the national objective for open science.

Advancing open science

The agency has a special responsibility to coordinate, monitor, and promote collaboration in the transition to open access to research data. This work includes providing guidance, recommending measures, analysing progress using indicators, and publishing annual reports.

Through its requirements for open publications and data management plans, the agency contributes to a more accessible and transparent research system. This work includes international collaboration, for example by coordinating Sweden’s participation in the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).

As a research funder, the Swedish Research Council requires grant recipients to prepare data management plans and to publish scientific publications with open access. Open access increases the transparency of research and the possibility to validate research results, and enhances their impact and benefit to society.

In addition, the Swedish Research Council represents Sweden in European collaboration on the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and works to ensure that national initiatives are connected to European infrastructures and standards. The agency also takes part in national and international initiatives to promote open access to scientific publications, including dialogues on future and alternative funding models.

The Swedish Research Council also works to ensure that research results are widely used by supporting research communication and collaboration with societal actors. This includes efforts to facilitate dissemination, develop forms of collaboration, and monitor how open science contributes to the impact and quality of research.
